Male Athlete of the Month - Jake Blackwelder - Varsity Football
Johns Creek High School Athletics proudly announces Jake Blackwelder as the Gladiator Male Athlete of the Month for September. The junior quarterback has emerged as a key leader for the football program, helping guide a remarkable turnaround and playing a pivotal role in restoring confidence and excitement around Gladiator football.
Blackwelder's leadership was on full display in the season opener when he helped lead Johns Creek to a victory over Northview, snapping the program's 27-game losing streak and signaling a new era for Gladiator football. His steady presence, competitive spirit, and commitment to the team have been instrumental in the program's improvement throughout the season.
According to Head Football Coach Jason Tester, Blackwelder's impact extends far beyond his performance on Friday nights.
"Jake has been a consistent leader for the football team," Tester said. "He sets the tone for the locker room, puts the team first, and works to compete every day. He's a major part of the cultural change for football at JC."
As the team's quarterback, Blackwelder has embraced the responsibility of leading both by example and through his daily commitment to improvement. His work ethic, resilience, and dedication have helped establish a foundation for success and provided a model for younger players throughout the program.
His leadership also extends into the classroom, where teachers consistently praise his character, maturity, and commitment to excellence.
Literature teacher Ellen Filipelli highlighted Blackwelder's integrity and humility.
"Jake is a fine student that cares about his academics and shows respect and maturity every day," Filipelli said. "I can always count on Jake to do the right thing. He is also humble and conscientious, which are both indicators of potential greatness in a student-athlete."
Math teacher Anna Holub Standish noted the determination and positivity that have become hallmarks of Blackwelder's approach to life.
"Jake approaches challenges with determination and a positive attitude," Standish said. "He consistently overcomes obstacles through hard work, commitment, and collaboration with others. Jake is a natural leader who demonstrates a deep passion for his team and teammates while remaining friendly, respectful, and conscientious toward fellow students. I am incredibly proud of Jake and not at all surprised that he has been selected as Athlete of the Month. Congratulations, Jake!"
Business teacher Russell Gray praised Blackwelder's perseverance and the example he sets for others.
"Jake Blackwelder is a special young man whose determination and perseverance inspire everyone around him," Gray said. "No matter the obstacles placed in his path, he continues to excel through hard work, grit, and an incredible commitment to his team. He leads by example, represents Johns Creek High School with pride, and exemplifies the values of a true Gladiator. Jake is exceptionally deserving of this honor, and I am proud to congratulate him on being named Athlete of the Month."
Those qualities have made Blackwelder a respected figure among teammates, teachers, and classmates alike. His willingness to lead, combined with his humility, toughness, and team-first mentality, embodies the values that Johns Creek Athletics strives to develop in all student-athletes.
The improvement of the football program this season is the result of many individuals working toward a common goal, but Blackwelder's leadership has been a driving force behind that progress. From helping end a 27-game losing streak to setting the standard for accountability and effort every day, he has played a critical role in the team's resurgence.
Whether leading the offense on the field, encouraging teammates in the locker room, or demonstrating maturity and responsibility in the classroom, Blackwelder exemplifies what it means to be a Gladiator.
Johns Creek High School Athletics proudly congratulates Jake Blackwelder on being named the September Gladiator Male Athlete of the Month and thanks him for his leadership, dedication, and commitment to excellence.
