The Johns Creek Lady Gladiators made history on October 8, defeating the Milton Eagles 6-5 in dramatic walk-off fashion at Johns Creek High School to claim the program's first-ever region championship.
With the victory, the Lady Gladiators finished the regular season atop the region standings with an 8-2 record and improved to 21-5 overall. Winning the championship on their home field in the final game of the regular season made the achievement even more special for the team, coaches, and supporters.
The Gladiators entered the bottom of the seventh inning tied with Milton, before mounting a championship-clinching rally. Sophomore pitcher Uma Pittman got things started with a line drive single to right field. Later in the inning, Audrey Lafon delivered the biggest hit of the night, scorching a line drive single to right field that drove in Pittman with the winning run. As the ball reached the outfield, the Gladiators erupted in celebration, storming the field and dog-piling in the infield to commemorate the historic victory.
Pittman was outstanding in the circle, tossing a complete game while striking out five batters. In addition to her work on the mound, she sparked the decisive seventh-inning rally with her leadoff hit.
The offense received key contributions throughout the lineup. Reese Stiltner and Addie Grindle each collected multiple hits, while Aery Huffman added a hit to help fuel the Gladiators' attack.
Following the game, Head Coach Jim Ernst reflected on the significance of the moment.
“I am so proud of these girls and what they've accomplished this season. They earned the right to be in that moment. I am also thrilled for this amazing group of seniors who have left their mark on this program and this community.”
The Lady Gladiators will now turn their attention to the postseason as they prepare to host a first-round state playoff series at Johns Creek High School on October 14 and 15. Game times will be announced at a later date.
The historic victory over Milton secures a region title that will be remembered for years to come and adds another remarkable chapter to an already outstanding season for the Lady Gladiators.
