Coach of the Month - Jim Ernst - Softball & Baseball
Johns Creek High School Athletics is proud to recognize Jim Ernst as the Gladiator Coach of the Month for September. Through his leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to student-athletes, Coach Ernst has transformed the Lady Gladiators softball program into one of the most respected teams in the region while also making a lasting impact on countless students both on and off the field.
Now in his third year leading the program, Ernst has overseen a remarkable turnaround. Taking over a team that struggled to compete consistently, he has built a culture centered on accountability, hard work, and belief. The results have been historic. This season, the Lady Gladiators have recorded the most wins in school history and are in pursuit of a region championship, establishing themselves as one of the top programs in the area.
While the wins and championships speak for themselves, those who work alongside Ernst point to something even more meaningful: his impact on people.
"Coach Ernst's dedication to his athletes is evident in everything he does," said Principal Chris Shearer. "He fosters a culture of hard work, respect, and teamwork while helping students become better competitors and better people. His leadership, passion, and unwavering commitment to his program make him highly deserving of Coach of the Month recognition."
Ernst's influence extends beyond game days and practices. His commitment to developing young people has earned the admiration of colleagues throughout the school community.
Assistant Coach Jeno Marvel, who has worked alongside Ernst throughout the program's rise, described him as a truly unique coach and mentor.
"In more than 20 years of coaching, I have never worked alongside anyone quite like Jim Ernst," Marvel said. "His dedication to our players and our program is unmatched. He pours countless hours into everything he does, from maintaining our facilities to creating practice and game plans that help every athlete develop and succeed."
Marvel emphasized that Ernst's greatest strength lies in the relationships he builds with his players.
"Every player knows Coach Ernst is invested in them not just as athletes, but as young people, and that's why they respect him so deeply and compete so hard for him," Marvel said. "There are coaches who win games, and there are coaches who change lives. Jim does both."
Assistant Principal Kathy Westbrooks highlighted Ernst's ability to connect with students throughout the school.
"When you walk downstairs and see a group of students surrounding a classroom door, you immediately know it is Coach Ernst's room," Westbrooks said. "He develops strong relationships with all his athletes and pushes them to be the best they can be both on the field and in the classroom. His dedication to softball and baseball is prevalent in every decision he makes and in the amount of time he spends taking care of the fields. We are privileged to have him as part of the JCHS Gladiator family."
Athletic Director Kirk Call praised Ernst for laying the foundation for long-term success while representing Johns Creek with excellence.
"Coach Ernst has completely changed the trajectory of our softball program," Call said. "What he has accomplished in just a few years is extraordinary. He has created a culture where student-athletes are expected to compete at a high level, support one another, and take pride in representing Johns Creek High School. The historic success this season is a direct reflection of his leadership, vision, and tireless work ethic. More importantly, he invests deeply in the lives of his players and helps prepare them for success long after their athletic careers are over."
Whether he is coaching softball, teaching in the classroom, maintaining facilities, or mentoring students, Ernst approaches every responsibility with the same passion and commitment. His leadership has elevated the softball program to unprecedented heights and positioned it for continued success in the years ahead.
With a historic season underway and a region championship within reach, the future of Johns Creek softball has never been brighter. Thanks to Coach Ernst's dedication and vision, the Lady Gladiators have become a program respected throughout the region and one that is rapidly building a reputation across the state.
